Plastic. An incredible invention that has changed our lives forever. Did you know that, according to Science Magazine, the amount of plastic produced in a year is roughly the same as the weight of ALL humans? That's insane! Majority of this plastic is water bottles and plastic straws. I mean how often do you go for a drive and it be polluted by seeing plastic bottles or straws on the shoulder of the road? The real crazy part of plastic is that it never goes away, with exception to the trash that has been burned up. That means that all plastic ever produced is still on the earth in some shape or form. Another startling fact coming from the United Nations is that of all the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy there is still more microplastics in the ocean than stars. Microplastics being the minuscule pieces of plastic that the naked eye cannot see. If we keep going at this rate by 2050 microplastics will outweigh fish, pound for pound, in the ocean. Even though the damage is done there are still things we can do to prevent more plastic pollution.
What can I do to help? I'm just one person, my water bottles or my one straw I use a day doesn't make a difference. That's what we all say. The problem with that frame of mind is that you're not the only one to think that way. We have millions and millions of people thinking this and soon enough you have an entire population thinking their waste doesn't mean anything! Now, the point of this post isn't for me to sit on my high horse and point fingers at everyone. The point is to raise awareness that, yes, your water bottles and your straws matter. They matter to the earth and everything that lives on the earth. For example, zero waste stores, these stores specialize in using no plastic whatsoever and having, like the name says, zero waste from their stores. Not all of us have the resources to start our own zero waste store but we can do some other things to help. By switching from water bottles to a refillable bottle you can save an average of 167 bottles per year, according to banthebottle.net. Another thing is plastic straws, an easy fix to stop using as many plastic straws is to not use a straw. Seems simple. If you must continue to use a straw there are plenty of options for reusable straws. Stock Threads carries a reusable, metal, foldable straw that's perfect for your keychain. Basically it comes down to raising awareness and being more mindful of your waste. We take a lot of things for granted in this country, waste being a major one. On that lovely note thanks for giving this post a read, as always, hope you enjoyed this food for thought. Let me know what you think about plastic waste. Is it be dramatized or realistic? Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or go to our Facebook page, Stock Threads. Have a great day and spread positivity!
